NYE // Final Blog Post

After over a decade of this blog, this will be my final post. I'm still going to share outfit photos & perhaps a monthly collage of thrift store finds & other things on my fashion Instagram: the_muffin_queens_closet & some food pictures & miscellaneous things on my heath Instagram: becomingmeshel. I post more about my daily activities on my Facebook. Thank you for reading along all these years.
Dress: V-Neck Black Sequined Midi Dress with Velvet Belt by Betsey Johnson, thrifted
Tights: Snag
Shoes: Fluevog, Mega Munster: Original
Necklace: Green Goddess Vintage
Earrings & Bracelet: Vintage
Stats: 5'7" 38-32-42
I loved this black sequined dress from Betsey Johnson that I thrifted the week before NYE. I was all set to wear a different black thrifted dress, but sequins win.
I had intended to wear gold glitter tights, but the glitter part stopped before the side slits & looked sloppy.
Gold glittery shoes & purse...
I have the matching necklace to these earrings & bracelet, but I rarely wear it anymore since it is massive & overpowers me.
David also wore black & gold.
Gold glitter shoes...we found David's at a vintage shop in Asheville, worn with Fluevog socks.
We made reservations at our former favorite restaurant, Heritage Tavern (because everywhere else we wanted to go was booked because I'm a procrastinator). Their menu for the night looked delightful & we got the cocktail pairing with it...so nice to have that as an alternative to wine.
We started with 2 drinks from their regular menu because we weren't quite ready to dive into the meal just yet.
Then the food & cocktail pairings began to arrive...
This was the best dinner we've ever had at Heritage. And that's saying a lot as we used to regularly be captivated by their food. The Rush Creek Reserve Risotto & Shaved White Alba Truffle was my favorite course...but if I could order them all again, I would. We even got a surprise extra course, an eggplant terrine, that I completely forgot to take a picture of. The chef also gave us a board of all 3 desserts with a candle. It wasn't necessary as our evening had been spectacular, but it was appreciated & made us smile.
A special souvenir menu celebrating 10 years of Heritage Tavern.
Our dessert cocktail came in a glass with a penguin in a top hat stem. At the end of this post, I will paste David's review of the night that he sent to them. Back at home, Carsie Blanton was playing live online. And New Year's Day...I made the best cinnamon rolls I've ever had in my life...& I'm picky. The only reason I made them was because Bon Appétit sent me a a rave review with a link to this recipe...spectacular...it took me 3 hours to make brunch, but worth it. There was also smoked salmon eggs Benedict, roasted potatoes with garlic & rosemary, & asparagus with more of that yummy hollandaise sauce on top.

Heritage Tavern New Year’s Eve Review, 2023

Our reservation was for 5:30pm, but we found ourselves around the corner at 4pm, so we called, and the answer, to our pleasant surprise, was yes, please do come in and have some cocktails as you wait for your reservation. Wonderful!
Even better, when we arrived, we were able to secure our favorite table. We ordered cocktails with pleasure.
We started with Not My Gumdrop Buttons, a delightful, festive cocktail as good as any of the very best on offer around Madison and pleasingly unique; and the Hot Sconnie, which was a solid cocktail, if somewhat lemon-forward (not that I mind, mind you). Finally, before deciding to order, we split a Mein Gluhwein, which turned out to be the best version of mulled wine either of us has ever had. Dark Horse had something really special a few years ago, with lots of concentrated grape and other fruit, which I adore, but this gluhwein avoided loads of fructose while delivering a cocktail that was supremely balanced and simply downright amazing. Next-level, and indeed, in spite of some amazing cocktails to come, our favorite of the entire evening.
We had a slightly awkward moment when our server dropped off the Snack Plates before we had a chance to order our cocktail flights. But, she took them away, took our order, and then dropped off the cocktails ten or fifteen minutes before the Snack Plates. But that’s all right, we had a quick word, and she made sure our drinks and food arrived at the same time, or close to it, the rest of the evening. Service throughout the evening was warmly attentive and excellent, with the trivial wrinkles mentioned above ironed out immediately. Couldn’t ask for better.
And that first cocktail was marvelous. Our server told us it was a take on a French 75, but what a take! The lemon on the rim perfumed every zinging sip, and the drink worked wonders with the tableau before us: The Escolar Tartare was the best version of that dish; the pork belly and tuna were excellent, and I am a particular fan of crispy foie gras and that pineapple mango compote was delightful. But for me the winner was the Nduja and Escargot. Nduja is so assertive, so heavily seasoned, that it seems to invariably be a mistake, yet here was a revelation, perfectly balanced with the escargot on its toasty wafer, and my favorite bite on that plate.  Next up, the Peekytoe Crab Salad, which was so clean on the palate that it put me in mind of sushi. I even had the thought that wasabi would work on that plate, which it might, but it wouldn’t have made the dish any better, just different. What was surprising was the cocktail pairing: On its own, not really quite for me. But with the dish, the magic happens. This became a theme we increasingly appreciated throughout the evening: The care and thought put into each dish, yes, and also into the creation of cocktails that would pair in such exquisitely lovely ways with each marvelous dish.
Then came the risotto, notorious destroyer of reputations, the dreaded death dish. I will say here what I told the server then: The dish is better than perfect. It establishes its perfection by being perfect risotto, which can go wrong so many, many ways, but then it exceeded perfection by bringing into focus elements that aren’t normally part of risotto, such as the sweet/savory balance brought with the pickled pear and truffle. Here, again, a high-wire act where one could plunge into certain doom by bringing the diner into mind of rice-pudding or simply unwanted or insufficiently sweet fruit, but no, every bite was pure joy. So many great dishes, but we had to agree, upon reflection, this was our favorite dish of the entire evening. And the cocktail — yes, it worked that same magic, again, somehow. How does the bartender keep up with the chef? That the bartender is succeeding at all in keeping up with the sorcery going on back of house, well, there is no higher praise.
Then, (if memory serves, it was at this point in service), a surprise gift from chef: Eggplant Terrine, with squash curry purée, cucumber mint mousse, pickled ground cherries, and pomegranate seeds. Not everyone loves eggplant, but if you wanted to convert them, this would be the dish to do it. Fabulous! And the squash curry purée was festive without going over the top or becoming the least bit bitter. All the elements came together for a dish that was seasonal, celebratory, and surprising in all the best ways.
The Whitefish and Lobster dish was another winner. We debated whether, with a name like Tom Kha, should it have more sauce? We didn’t come to agreement, except to say the dish was grand. The cocktail was memorable in its own right, with ingredients that again worked in beautiful harmony with the dish. I found myself licking the sumac off the glass, and reveling in the green pepper and chili notes the hummed in the coconut goodness.
For our fourth course, the Ribeye and Short Rib. The cocktail was a drinky drink, but it has a great deal to stand up to, and it does. What a great cocktail! The dish was a comforting yet original take on meat and potatoes — the potato bone was a nice touch, the jus was just right, and the cook on the Ribeye was perfectly rare. The Ribeye did come off more like Prime Rib, which I don’t mind — I imagine it may have been sous vide. Great plate, and a generous one — perhaps too generous? We could have been served at least one-third less beef, and been perfectly content, and we told our server so. I’m sure no one says such things, but it’s true. Of course, we did finish every bite, because, well, how could we not?
Then we ordered desert. We made our choices, but were served all three. Very gracious of chef to send all that on! Deserts were marvelous. The Opera Cake was easier to eat by first flipping it upside down; the chocolate just wouldn’t cut with all that softness underneath. Fantastic chocolate and espresso desert. The Profiterole was excellent. And the surprise Cheesecake was actually the equal of the other two, which was quite a surprise, indeed. Creme Fraiche made it distinct in the best way, and the pear gelee paired beautifully. We opted for the limoncello, which I forgot to ask if it had been housemade. It was certainly delightful.
Our entire evening was a special joy, a true fine dining experience: The best food, the best service, the best drinks, all coming together to make a magical night. We would have stayed longer, but we simply ran out of human capacity to enjoy any further hospitality. We are so grateful for such a thoughtful menu, so expertly executed, by everyone in the kitchen and also behind the bar, and for everyone front of house who made our evening so thoroughly enjoyable.

Tattoo // The Del McCoury Band // Freight House

Dress: The Somerset Maxi Dress: Velvet Edition by Anthropologie via Nuuly
Shoes: Fluevog, Super Fine: Cardinal
Purse, Necklaces, & Bracelet: Vintage
Earring: etXarte
Stats: 5'7" 38-32-42
The Somerset dress is always easy to wear whatever fabric it comes in...fitted at the waist with tiers & pockets...I adore getting these dresses from Nuuly...I only own 3 because the neckline is not my favorite...if it was a standard v-neck...I'd probably buy them all. The gold velvet is stunning...it reminds me of my wedding dress. This is definitely in the top 3 of the number of compliments I received...people loved this dress on me.
This autumnal background couldn't have been more perfect for this look.
Perhaps I should have worn gold glittery stockings with this...but we took these pictures immediately after my tattoo appointment, & I didn't bring any. I need more gold shoes.
We found 3 different amber necklaces from the same vendor at the very first Midwest Vintage Flea that we went to...here are 2 of them...I think they look lovely together. I believe this is my first time wearing the longer one.
My make-up with this outfit included...Sephora eyeliner in Matte Black, Golden Nugget & Showgirl eyeshadow by Too Faced, MAC lipliner in Chicory, Bronze Shimmer lipstick from MAC, & A England nail polish in Holy Grail.
What?! A chance to see *inside* the building we use most often for pictures?!! Yes! I started out this day getting a lymphatic massage with Courtney & dashing into Stalzy's to get a loaf of their rye bread for dinner later. Then...a freehand tattoo appointment with Mar to fill in the gaps on my left lower leg with falling leaves. They got all the leaves placed & some of them colored.
Less blank areas...
A car wash on my way home to make dinner, Cabbage & Kielbasa with Rye Croutons...before heading to Stoughton...
To see The Del McCoury Band with Kate & Jason. In the lounge before the show, members of Soggy Prairie played a set.
I think I've seen The McCoury Brothers play, but this was my first time seeing Del...they were fantastic & full of strings.
The next morning, we accidentally? planned? met up at the last outdoor market of the year. Bill, our spinach guy, gave me his hand warmers after I declined them 5 or 6 times...isn't that sooo nice?!
Kate bought me this alligator scarf years ago...he helped keep me warm. David & I bought about 50 pounds of apples from various farmers. Back at home...we finally separated our alliums from our squash & potatoes. I knew they shouldn't be stored together, but I didn't realize what a huge difference it would make. My potatoes used to last maybe 3 days before sprouting, turning green, & going soft...some of these potatoes are still in the drawer & looking great over a month in. Breakfast! And the cheapest most fabulous thing I planned for our trip to Asheville...a reading of an amazing play.
Later that day...we ventured inside the warehouse that we used for these outfit photos. The guy that rents this part sells antiques...mostly midcentury modern. I LOVED this liquor cabinet...note that that top bit recesses back as you open the door. If our wreck room was done...I would have lobbied hard for this piece...but we are already storing too many things.
A reproduction Penny-Farthing...lime & pink swivel couch...It was fun to look around & finally see inside this fabulous warehouse.
He had real candles burning on the steps...I was a bit afraid I might start my dress on fire. The window I'm standing by is the same window I'm standing in front of in these outfit photos.
Back at home...we made a meal of roasted potatoes & ribeye. I changed shoes to go to the organ concert with David. Ken Cowen played the Overture's concert organ...it was great. They do an organ series every year & I've only gone to one other & this is David's first time.
The final time I wore this dress was to travel to Paducah, Kentucky...it was roughly half way to Asheville, so I booked us an Airbnb & made reservations at Sara Bradley's (Top Chef season 16 & 20) restaurant, freight house. We started out with cocktails, for me, a French Kiss (Mirabeau rose gin, genepy des ales, Peychauds bitters, absinthe spritz, lemon) & David chose a Lord Baelish (Jim Beam bourbon, balsamic, basil, ginger beer).
Sara's menu had everything I adore in a restaurant...an ever changing creative menu based on what's in season.
Spot Sara (she's talking to another table behind David & then with the bartender)...she delivered some food to us & chatted for a minute...I didn't want to bother her with taking her picture...so I just took candids. Our waiter, John, was outstanding...he paced things just right & was a delight to talk with. Our first food...Pumpkin Bisque (coconut, ginger, sesame, curried yogurt) & Deviled Eggs (caramelized onion).
Pork Rinds (with honey thyme aioli), Baby Back Ribs (pecan pork, brown butter streusel, chocolate buttermilk), & Pork Belly Tostada (cabbage & apple slaw, horseradish aioli, stout bbq sauce).
Round 2 of drinks: David had an Owen's Island (Rittenhouse rye, Carpano Antica, Luxardo cherry, orange oil) & I picked a Snake in the Grass (Teremana Reposado, Lucid absinthe, naranja, Carpano Antica, fresh sour). But wait! There's more...Bacon Fat Cornbread (we were so sure we'd love it, we ordered 2...it was the only disappointing thing all evening), Roasted Cauliflower...as seen on Instagram (radicchio, dates, curry spices, pomegranate molasses, smoked cashews)...we'd added grilled shrimp & they forgot to bring it, so Sara delivered it herself. And finally...dessert...we shared a Chocolate Fudge Cake (flourless chocolate cake, orange butter cream, cranberry mulled wine glaze) & a Sweet Pea Cake...as seen on Top Chef (buttermilk pudding, lemon curd, pistachios). This dinner was full of wonder & joy...Sara is a master of combining sweet & savory in every dish & we couldn't get enough. We so thoroughly enjoyed it, we immediately made another reservation for the night we were driving back home.

Inappropriate Song Night // Craig Ferguson

Dress: Black/Gold Deco Mini Dress by ?, thrifted
Tights: Calzedonia
Shoes: Christian Siriano for Payless, thrifted
Necklace: Green Goddess Vintage
Purse, Earring, & Bracelet: Vintage
Stats: 5'7" 38-32-42
I grabbed this dress out of my closet & quickly tried to style it...my closet is a mess, it's not easy. Great fit on this much shorter than I'm used to fit & flare mini.
I was happy I remembered I had these lace tights as they look great with the design on the dress...this is my first time wearing them. This is also my first time wearing these heels...I thrifted them in flats as well...black & gold shoes are useful to have.
Black & gold jewelry...
I first wore this dress to attend Inappropriate Song Night at Dance Life Studio (where I used to take belly dancing classes...I'll get back to it) with Kate. I wore this dress with black tights & maybe red Docs? No pictures allowed during the performances. It was a fun night of burlesque, bellydance, singing, & dancing. The second time I wore this dress (when these photos were taken) was to go out with David...but first, dinner at home. We went to the Capitol Theatre to see Craig Ferguson...5th row...he's a sexy funny old guy.

The Garbologists // Violent Femmes // Brian Setzer

Dress: Veggie Garden Dress by Eva Rose
Sandals: Fluevog, Picnic: Kerry
All Jewelry & Purse: Vintage
Stats: 5'7" 38-32-42
I love a veggie dress (fruit too)! I rented this a few times from Gwynnie Bee in various sizes & eventually bought it. Great fit & flare frock in a cotton quilting fabric that is ideal for warmer months. I adore this style of Eva Rose dress, similar to Cherry Velvet, but slightly less expensive.
I used this 50s silhouette as the perfect excuse to get out a vintage handbag.
My last wearing of these sandals for the season.
This vintage parure reminds me of fruit...
My make-up with this outfit included...NYX eyeliner in Jet Black, Tangerine eyeshadow by Make Up For Ever, Natasha Denona eyeshadow in Monroe, Urban Decay lipliner & lipstick in Bang, Clockwork lipstick from Sugarpill Cosmetics, & Essie nail polish in Sexy Plunge.
I first wore this dress to have these photos taken before seeing The Garbologists with David & Kate back in September. Mango Margarita in a can...not bad. They had an art exhibit on theme outside the theatre.
I especially enjoyed this artist's found objects from a fire at her house. And cloth reimagined...pants made out of vintage sheets & a bedspread.
The girlie!
Wall of garbage. A mediocre play with exceptional company.
I wore this frock a second time back in October to see The Violent Femmes 40th Anniversary tour of their first album. I changed up my footwear to orange Docs worn with black shark bite tights. I managed to work my way up to about the third row on the main floor. Also, I bought a *white* t-shirt & a pack of buttons. I would have preferred black, obviously, but I wanted the album cover on the front & the dates of the tour on the back, so it was my only option.
Elizabeth Moen & her band opened...which I thought was an odd choice, but the audience loved her. I saw her at The Shitty Barn this summer. Violent Femmes!!! I've been a fan since 8th grade. I've only been a member of 2 fan clubs...Culture Club/Boy George & The Femmes...their newsletter was called The Permanent Record...I wish I had kept them.
This was my first time seeing them...what an amazing show! They did their entire debut album before launching into other songs. Gordon played electric guitar, acoustic guitar, violin, & banjo.
They ended the evening with American Music...so much dancing & singing...the energy of the crowd was joyful...we were all reliving our youth...including the band...who were just having fun.
I had a white Femmes shirt in high school, back when I had all that collagen in my skin & any color looked good on me. I am going to challenge myself to wear this t-shirt next summer at the barn. I wonder what I'll pair it with. In high school, I had a grass green mini skirt & the same color pants...that is what I used to wear my Violent Femmes shirt with...& various colors of lace tights. If only a camera in your pocket had been a thing back then...I have so few pictures of that time.
The final time I wore this dress was shortly before I left for Mexico...at Target buying Halloween candy for the nurses there. A brief dash into the Eastside Goodwill...I don't go there often as the pickings are slim. And again, I changed up my footwear...this time it was shiny red Docs with black tights.
Later that night...Brian Setzer at The Orpheum. I first started liking The Stray Cats in 6th grade & I think it's largely because of them & Cyndi Lauper that I got into vintage clothing. I would have bought his latest vinyl, but I thought $40 seemed a bit outrageous (it's $28 on his website).
I was enthralled by this amazing standup bass with green flames. Again, my first time seeing this artist I've been a fan of for decades. I grew up in the U.P., so I wasn't able to see concerts since no-one toured up there. Although I did see Rick Springfield the summer between 8th & 9th grade. I wonder how that happened?! It was years after I was a fan & he was past his prime, but it was still exciting.
There were 4 Japanese guys in the front row that have been following Brian around...they were fun to watch. Another show with tremendous energy...he even did 2 Stray Cats songs.
