Charleston: S.N.O.B., Carriage Ride, Boat Tour

Dress: Sundrenched Printed Maxi Dress by Free People (size M) via Nuuly
Sandals: Klub Nico from Anthropologie via Poshmark
All Jewelry: Vintage
Stats: 5'7" 38-32-42
This warm orangey rust cotton maxi was a dream to wear...I love a breathable cotton summer dress...even if they do tend to wrinkle. The smocked bodice gives a perfect fit...& somehow those tiny little straps always stayed on my shoulders. I wore this without a bra & I feel that anyone with a larger chest would need to size up as my C cups barely fit in there. This was an ideal maxi length for me as I was able to wear it with either flats or heels. The website calls this pink...it's not.
Lots of fabric in the skirt made it extra swishy.
I find shoulders extremely sexy...my favorite thing about summer is being able to bare them.
It's so funny that shoes I buy with the intension of painting end up being super useful & go with so much...like these pretties I found on Poshmark.
While I adore color...earthy tones look best on me...
My make-up with this outfit included...Urban Decay eyeliner in Torch & Lucky, Huda Beauty eyeshadow in Nefertiti & Blood Moon, Pumpkin lipliner by NYX, Heat lipstick from UD, & OPI nail polish in Man of La Mancha.
I first wore this dress to try out a completely new-to-us place, Baldwin Street Grille...because their offering for burger week sounded delicious (2 smashed patties with grilled scallions, jalapeño mac & cheese, coleslaw, jerk BBQ, & American cheese on a cornbread bun). It's this dive bar across the street from what used to be Smart Studios.
The kitchen served me fries instead of the tots I asked for...so, our waiter brought us a big basket...I told him...there is no way we'll ever finish those. Ha! The food was great & they were playing classic MTV videos...is there actually a channel now that just plays music?!
We headed over to Bartell Theatre to see Moon Over Buffalo...we were just early enough to pop next door to have a cocktail...then we ordered another & got in our seats at exactly 7:30. David's drinks: Macadamia Mai Tai (roasted pistachio oil fat washed Plantation 3 Star rum, macadamia orgeat, lemon, celery & rhubarb bitters, wheatgrass Wray & Nephew float) & Peter Pandan (Trois Rivieres Cuvee de l'Ocean rhum, sake, pandan syrup, mango, lime, pineapple, almond-mint foam, nutmeg). My cocktails: Rios Mios (Pitu cachaca, Smith & Cross rum, Finocchietto, strawberry purée, honey syrup, lime) & Doc's Orders (Death's Door gin, Saler's gentian, carrot tarragon syrup, lemon, tonic water, celery bitters, dukkah carrot rim).
Moon Over Buffalo was Carol Burnett's return to Broadway in 1995, after a 30 year absence...the director had sent her an invitation to come to their performance of it. It was funny, but could have been better acted. The second time I wore this dress was for our last full day in Charleston. It was cloudy, but not rainy...yay! We started off at Slightly North of Broad (S.N.O.B.) for brunch.
Another beautiful old building with a great remodel...I can't recall seeing any new construction in this city...at least downtown. We were greeted by a man singing & playing guitar...which was ideal background music...as we were just the right distance away. Our server brought us warm cornbread (yum) & I ordered a mimosa. My mom had a bowl of Butternut Squash Bisque (topped with crème fraîche & pecan crumble) & I began with Grass Fed Beef Carpaccio (thinly sliced raw beef, red wine dijon, parmesan cheese, capers, grilled baguette). For our main courses...mom got Storey Farm Eggs Benedict (gf buttermilk biscuit, sautéed kale, country ham, hollandaise) & I had Sunday Morning Fish Fry (catfish, Marsh Hen Mill grits, braised collard greens, jalapeño corn tartar). Another great meal in Charleston. A fountain near the restaurant...then a walk to the Big Red Barn for our carriage ride.A tour of the city with Van, a lifelong resident of Charleston, & our horses, Yogi & Boo Boo. The churches, architecture, & houses were all splendid...so much history. It always feels to me that down south is like going to another country. So many grand houses...& you can see a bit of Rainbow Row (13 colorful houses) below.Porches everywhere.Of all the information we learned on our tour...the one that sticks with me is about the fake front doors. The real front of the house is on the side which faces the ocean for the best breeze (the houses were built when there was no a/c)...but they added a door on the front of the house where you'd expect there to be one...it later became called a hospitality door...when it was open, it meant the family was available for visitors. Next time I go to Charleston, I'd like to take a tour inside some of these grand homes.Cobblestone street; a round church; Henry's, the oldest restaurant in South Carolina; passing another carriage tour.I loved this girl's floral dress...I told my mom & she replied...the see-through one?! I hadn't even noticed. After our tour...we walked back to the pineapple fountain. My mom was recovering from knee replacement surgery...so I did a quick jaunt solo...as we had a short drive, then more walking to our boat tour. Beer & wine for sale on the boat...but no sparkling water. The flag is flying above Fort Sumter...which was where the opening shots of the Civil War were fired. Navy aircraft carrier, the Cooper River Bridge, & the aquarium. Back at our hotel...mom went up to the room & I walked across the street to Marion Square where the art fair was set up as part of the Spoleto Festival. Francis Marion Hotel, where we stayed. We decided to have dinner at the hotel restaurant, The Swamp Fox, because all the good restaurants were booked & my mom was sick of walking. It was the only mediocre food we had during our visit & not worth talking about. We ended the evening with a White Russian (but my mom asked for it with Bailey's Irish Creme...which I looked up & it has its own name, a Mudslide)...I think I'll try ordering that the next time I'm in a bar without a fancy cocktail menu.

Madison Symphony Orchestra // Husk // Flying Home

Dress: Tropical Kelly Fit & Flare Dress by Leota (size M) via Gwynnie Bee
Sandals: Born
Earring: Kerala Rose
Necklace & Bracelet: Vintage
Stats: 5'7" 38-32-42
Gorgeous summer smocked frock...quite different from the typical Leota work dresses. The fit was excellent & it was a great length. Sexy up top with the off the shoulder sleeves & ties to keep it up. The tropical print was made up of dots in green, blue, white, & pink on a black background...& the flounce at the bottom was the ideal ending.
The first time I wore this dress (outfit photos) was without a bra, but the other 2 times I wore a black bra that matched...so I didn't care if the straps sometimes showed.
These sandals were the perfect pairing...
I don't wear this Miriam Haskell necklace often enough...it was a bit fancy for this dress, but I liked it.
My make-up with this outfit included...Urban Decay eyeliner in Mars, Dragon eyeshadow from UD, Mediteranee eyeshadow duo by Nars, Bite Beauty lipliner in 72, Sugarpill Cosmetics lipstick in Nectar, Bang lipstick from UD, & OPI nail polish in Orange You Going to the Game?
I initially wore this dress to attend the final Madison Symphony Orchestra concert of the season with David. I was excited for my favorite, Carmina Burana...so dramatic...but they also introduced us to a new-to-us composer, Florence Price (I'm listening to her right now on Spotify), which we loved. A fantastic way to end the year.
The next time I wore this dress was in Charleston with my mom...to have dinner at Husk...the restaurant I was most excited to dine at. They were completely booked when I tried to make reservations a few weeks ahead of time, but when I talked with someone on the phone, they told me to get there early & we could possibly eat at the bar or an outdoor table. We showed up around 5 & were told we could get a seat in the bar next door at 8...but after checking it out, I decided it was too loud...the only other table was at 9 on their upstairs covered patio (the rain continued). I desperately said yes...& when we came back...the lovely hostess seated us at a table in the main dining room...she said it was the least she could do after the woman was so rude to me (I was waiting to check in & a lady asked if I was in line...I said yes, then as soon as the hostess was free...she went up to the counter {my back was turned as I was talking to my mom}...she was 1/2 an hour late for her reservation because she claimed she got lost {she repeated this at least a dozen times}...when she was finished I told her I had been next in line & she knew it...she had an excuse for that too). I have a feeling we got her table...it pays to speak up.
There are 3 locations of Husk...all in beautiful old houses. I was thrilled to get a table where I could peep the kitchen...tucked under the stairs. It turns out...neither my mom nor I take good photos...I was wondering where I got that from.
I couldn't decide on a drink, so I told our server my narrowed down choices & she suggested...Southern Jewel (Blanco tequila, Ford's sloe gin, aperol, strawberry, cucumber, honey, cardamom)...it was wonderful. My mom ordered Field Greens (buttermilk dressing, crispy ham, cucumber, red onion) & I started with Wood Fired Oysters (fermented Chile ramp butter)...which was one of the best things I've ever eaten. I don't think I've ever even liked a cooked oyster before.
The cocktail menu looked so good, I had to try another...Hell's Belles (mezcal, Reposado tequila, St. Germain, pepper agave, thyme, Peychauds). My main course was Ramp Lumache (NC shrimp, fermented chili garum, okra, chicken cracklins) & mom picked Grouper (country ham broth, shiitake, peas, carrots). Both dishes were excellent.
And that Hearth Baked Skillet Cornbread with Broadbent's bacon crumble *swoon*. Our waitress asked if we wanted dessert...my mom declined...but I didn't want this meal to end, so I said yes. This was a big deal for me as my mom has told me I'm fat my entire life & always criticizes my food choices, so I feel less than me around her...but I did what I wanted. And my mom ended up ordering Blueberry Goat Cheese Ice Cream.
I nearly went with the Lemon Poppyseed Olive Oil Cake, but I am SO happy I got the Chocolate Chess Pie (coffee ice cream, duck fat caramel, bourbon whipped cream, smoked salt)...my immediate thought upon tasting it was...David would love this. Every bite was spectacular. There is an enormous board displayed in the entryway of all the farms they source their food from. Husk uses local in season produce & changes their menu daily...just my kind of place.
This would be my favorite restaurant if I lived here...I hope I can someday share it with David (this is not a Kate friendly menu). They also have a location in Nashville...so that is the first place I'm making a reservation the next time we go. Back at our pretty old hotel
The final time I wore this dress was on our way out of town...look...it's sunny in Charleston! Scenic drive through the mountains of the Carolinas & Tennessee. We stopped at Hardee's for lunch (not my choice)...I don't eat fast food because I think it's disgusting...with the exception of Culver's.
At the airport...going home...to the Capital of Cheese...to Super Boo & the doggies. There's no place like home.

Charleston // Seasaw

Dress: Sonnet Dress in Buzz Print (size S) by Effie's Heart
Sandals: Dansko
Earring: etXarte
Necklace & Bracelet: Vintage
Stats: 5'7" 38-32-42
This Sonnet style of Effie's Heart dresses is one of my favorites, but it doesn't have pockets...faux wrap top, low back, full skirt that hits the shins...it's an ideal warm weather day dress. I'm a solid medium in EH, but they have sample sales where they sell their dresses for $40 (regularly $120)...& those are all smalls. I can easily wear S-L in this brand since they are made of cotton spandex jersey.
My back NEEDS a tattoo...perhaps by next summer?
Every time I wear this necklace, I think about how both David & I questioned if it was me...would I wear it?
My make-up with this outfit included...Urban Decay eyeliner in Zero; Carnelian, Jasper, & Agate eyeshadow from Natasha Denona; UD lipliner & lipstick in Bang; & OPI nail polish in My Chihuahua Doesn't Bite Anymore.
I brought this dress with me to Charleston & it's what I wore on our first full day there. In the rain...which was the theme of our trip. First, I popped downstairs to the attached Starbucks. I meant to get a coffee...but I left with dessert, which is basically what their Frappuccinos are. After getting ready, we headed down the street to the Charleston City Market. It was extremely touristy & I don't feel the need to go back.
There was definitely some local art & food...but most of it was uninteresting. After lots of walking around...we left the market & took a short stroll to Hyman's Seafood. It was in a great old building & I adored this spiral staircase.
Despite it being 2pm, there was a bit of a wait...just 25 minutes. By the time we left it was well over an hour to get a table. My mom & I had a drink at the bar. At our table, Clifton brought us out some boiled peanuts...which I'd never had before & they were delightful. They tasted like salty cooked pinto beans. I wouldn't snack on them on a regular basis...but I like to try new things.
The walls of Hyman's are filled with framed photos of all the celebrities that have eaten there...& there are name plates on the tables of who sat there...we just happened to be seated at the Neil Diamond table...my mom's favorite singer. These hushpuppies were the best I've ever had...crispy outside, moist inside...with the ideal sweet/salty ratio. I brought home a mix...we'll see if it even comes close to the ones they make in house.
My mom had a bowl of She Crab Soup & a Chilean Seabass Croquette. I had a Catfish Po'Boy & we shared some Fried Green Tomatoes (photo taken after we'd eaten most of them).
During our meal, the owner, Eli (4th generation, his son also works there), came to our table to check how everything was...also, as we were leaving...he was outside with an enormous bowl of hushpuppies...feeding all the people waiting for a table. I took one.
We were supposed to go on a boat ride & carriage tour around the city...but no boats were going out on the choppy water...& we cancelled our carriage ride with the hopes of having better weather the next day. Of course I had looked up thrift stores, not really thinking we'd get to any...however...we drove out to the one I most wanted to check out, Reinvented.
It was amazing in there...so many pretty clothes, but also just decorated to the hilt. I LOVED it. There were outrageously huge (new) sun hats of all colors around the store & I wish I would have picked one up in orange or yellow. There was a sale going on that just started that day...it's posted on the mirror below, but probably too small to read...Blue Tags 60% off, Pink 50%, & Yellow 20%. All my items were blue tags. I got all of the garments I tried on with the exception of the floral skirt, which I adored...but was too big on me.
Checking out my butt.
There was so much stuff everywhere...I didn't even see the 2 birds in a cage until we were checking out...no photos were taken because I'm not a fan of birds...but those lamps *swoon*. My mom got the jacket & pants hanging next to my stuff, plus a pair of shoes. I would shop here every week if it were local...lovely lady working there & lots of wonderful clothing of all sizes.
The second time I wore this dress was to work back in Madison (& get these photos taken at Olbrich Gardens)...where I *did* take a picture of a bird. A nice big salad...& prepping for a picnic the following day. I wore this dress again the next day...lymphatic massage with Courtney & a bit of shopping at Goodwill.
Then I picked Kate up & we were off to the Shitty Barn to see our favorite local band, Seasaw. I made us a dill salmon salad...which was good, but not my best.
I also brought some farmers' market strawberries & Kate supplied the watermelon. A lovely day in Spring Green with the best company.
The opening band, Jane Hobson, were surprisingly good considering they had only been together a year...they ended with The Cranberries: Dreams...which was their whole vibe.
Seasaw! We love those girls. They have a band now...& it was super cute...they came out & played their first song alone, as usual...then they added band members who appeared to just be walking by...a drummer, bassist, & keyboard player...& they just all seemed to be having so much fun...it was a great energy & always makes the show better. We couldn't remember how we first got into them...so this blog came to the rescue as I tracked it down the next day. Apparently, back in 2014, we first saw them at Bubble Music Fest...& the reason we wanted to see them play was because the bartender at High Noon was playing them before a show & I liked them so much, I had to ask her who it was. Mystery solved.
